Torrijas are the quintessential Easter sweet in Spain, although it is not the only one. It is an easy to prepare sweet that has been with us since time immemorial, however, it is too caloric and not only because of the ingredients, but also because of the way it is prepared. But it is possible to somewhat reduce the fat in French toast, you just have to modify the way you prepare them.

The oven is your great ally in the kitchen, it is one of the best ways to save calories and empty fats from food. Even when preparing batters, you can use your oven and you will get much lighter dishes. These torrijas are still powerful, since the ingredients are the same as in the traditional way of preparing this sweet, but at least, we save fat by avoiding frying. Ingredients
  • A special loaf of bread for French toast
  • ½ liter of whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • The peel of a lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 eggs
  • ground cinnamon
  • sugar (to decorate)

Preparation
  1. We put the milk in a saucepan over the fire and add the lemon skin, taking care not to have the white part.
  2. We also add the cinnamon stick and let it cook over low heat, stirring from time to time.
  3. When the milk starts to boil, remove from the heat and add the sugar.
  4. Stir well and reserve the milk while it infuses, for at least 15 minutes
  5. Meanwhile, we are going to cut the bread into slices about two fingers thick.
  6. We preheat the oven to 200 degrees and prepare a baking tray with a sheet of greaseproof paper.
  7. We strain the milk to remove any rest.
  8. Now we are going to prepare the torrijas, first we soak in the milk, then we go through the beaten egg and we are placing it on the oven tray.
  9. We introduce the tray in the oven in the highest part.
  10. We let the torrijas brown on one side and turn them over.
  11. Once they are ready, we go through a mixture of sugar and cinnamon and reserve in a well-deep source.
