Turmeric, the inexpensive version of saffron

turmeric

I don't know if you know it, but the word turmeric comes from the Arabic word "kourkoum", and it is also known by its other name: «Saffron from India«. Turmeric was born in the Middle East and has been cultivated for more than 2200 years with the particularity that it allowed (and allows) preserve the freshness, flavor and nutritional value of the food they eat.

Speaking a bit about its taste, it is basically sweet, but it is also a little bit bitter and spicy, which makes it ideal to spice up some foods. Its smell is particularly reminiscent of ginger and for this reason it is confused with it and is sometimes replaced by turmeric, because it is cheaper. It is also replaced by saffron due to its yellow-orange color.

Another detail is that it is one of the ingredients in curry powder, for this reason the curry achieves that very characteristic yellow color. In addition, and speaking a bit of nutrition, it is indicated for fish, egg and rice dishes. I also recommend it for some marinated fish and shrimp skewers.

If you want something more applications, You can use it in sauces, legumes, pickles and cereals and if you like the oriental wave, you can even try it with a delicious tea.

It is sold in powder form, although in some places you can find it in dry root. You have to store it in an airtight glass jar and in a cool, dry place.
