Pumpkin and orange jam

Pumpkin and orange jam

We are in pumpkin season and oranges and when the garden is generous with the former, a wonderful proposal is to prepare the pumpkin and orange jam that I am proposing today. When the garden is generous, in addition to freezing pumpkin to enjoy it all year round, we can prepare preserves as delicious as this one for breakfast, serve with yogurt or fill cakes.

Making a jam is not a mystery, but it does take time. Also, if you are not going to consume them that week, as has been our case, our advice is always that sterilize the jars once filled with the preserve and closed so that the food is not altered by microorganisms

If I like this jam for something, it is because mix the sweet with the bitter. The pumpkin and sugar are responsible for giving this preserve a sweet touch, while the orange juice gives it that bitterness that makes it so special and lightens it.

The recipe

The pumpkin and orange jam that we propose today maintains a perfect balance between the sweet and the bitter. It is perfect for breakfast, but also as a filling for biscuits and cakes.

Ingredients
  • 1/ 2 kilo of pumpkin
  • 350 g. of sugar
  • The juice of three oranges
  • The peel of an orange

Preparation
  1. We sterilize two glass jars with their lids. To do this, put them in a saucepan with water, over the heat, and let them boil for 15 minutes. After the time we take them out with tweezers and let them drain on a clean cloth so as not to touch the inside of the jars.
  2. While the jars are drying, cut the pumpkin into small cubes.
  3. Put the pumpkin cubes, the sugar, the orange juice and the peel in a saucepan and we cook over low heat, Stirring frequently so it doesn't stick, until the pumpkin is well cooked. Depending on the size of the pumpkin cubes, cooking will take between 30 and 40 minutes.
  4. Once the jam has the desired consistency, you can crush the pumpkin with a fork to achieve it- remove the orange peel and remove from heat.
  5. Do you want to sterilize this pumpkin and orange jam preserve? Fill the previously boiled and dry jars and close them well. Put a cloth in the bottom of a deep pot, place the jars on top and cover them with water. Let them boil in a water bath for 30 minutes. In this way the jam will keep for a year in good condition.
